So, no more food deliveries. I’m happy about that because they were stressing me out a little bit – so much food! But it also means that I don’t have anything to eat. After my meetings today I needed to go to the market to get some groceries and other things if I could find them (a pan to cook eggs). There’s a small version of the bigger market just outside of the university campus and Siddie showed me how to get there today (pointed me in the right direction – it’s very close) while we were on campus. So after a brief rain shower, I went home and dropped off my computer, got changed, and walked there. A couple of different people on motorcycles stopped to see if I wanted a ride. I told them I was fine walking (I don’t have a helmet yet). When I got to the market I went into a liquor and wine shop first (priorities!) and spoke to Abdu. I asked him how much the wine cost (130,000 Le) and also where I might find some eggs and tomatoes. He walked outside with me and pointed in the direction to go. A young man was there (about 12). He said he would show me. He was carrying a huge cooler on his head – not sure what he was selling. He went with me to do all my shopping. He pointed out certain vendors who might have what I wanted, helped me across the street (with all the cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles – it’s kind of like the old frogger game – quite dangerous – so I appreciated his help). At one point he reminded me to zip my purse closed because people could see my money (oops!).
After I finished shopping, my helper (Zacharia) walked me back to the wine shop to get my wine from Abdu. I gave my new, young friend some money for his help and I headed home.
*Abdu invited me to stay and chat in front of the store for a while, but I told him I needed to get home. I told him I would come and chat sometime and that I want to learn to speak Krio better.
He taught me my first phrases:
Usai yu de go (where are you going?)
A de go na os (I’m going to my house).
What a wonderful experience! Glad you are well and have found the wine shop:)
Colorful market. I’m so glad you found a young kind helper to get you oriented. Yes, priorities!
I love trying to decipher creole words. This is wonderful. I know there are challenging scary parts (big spiders, eek!!) but you are moving through everything with so much grace. Love your blog. Thanks
