All five of the students who make up our first bachelor degree cohort in the Inclusion and Special Needs Education program at UNIMAK are teachers at St. Joseph’s School for the Hearing Impaired in Makeni.
They organized a Sports Meet that I got to attend recently. So much fun!
Children were organized into “houses” and they competed in various events for points. The house with the most points at the end of the TWO DAY event was the winner!
They marched around the field for the opening and then took an oath to participate with honor and respect.
There were fun games like a relay race while carrying eggs on spoons and a race where they had to stop halfway and blow up a balloon until it popped.
Of course, there were several foot races!
Did you notice? No shoes! They did not wear shoes for any events because, “shoes just slow you down.”
Why socks? Well, it’s Africa! The ground is HOT!
Athletes competed for trophies that were rented for the event. They got to march around with the trophies and then return them… until next year. Since I helped to fund the event, I also got to hold a trophy for a minute.
